The method
Short answer. Bonded hair extensions are a method where each individual strand is attached to your own hair with its own keratin bond, with no tape, wefts, rings or glue.
The strand arrives from the factory with a keratin tip already formed. The stylist separates a fine section of your hair, threads the donor strand onto it and heats the join with specialist pliers, which softens the keratin so it wraps around your hair and sets, forming a strong but removable attachment.
In the trade this is called pre-bonded, meaning the attachment is already made. You will also see the terms keratin bond, K-tip, U-tip, hot fusion and Italian method. They all describe the same thing.
No sewing. No tape. No metal at the root.
The difference
Short answer. The bond material. Italian uses a ready-made keratin capsule, English uses resin applied by gun on the spot.
Both are hot fusion bonded hair extensions, but the results differ noticeably.
We work by the Italian method only. The reason is simple. When the bond is formed in production, its weight and size are identical across all four hundred strands, whereas hand-applied resin varies inevitably, and one head ends up with bonds of different sizes, some of which will show.

Hot or cold
Short answer. Hot fusion lasts longer and looks more discreet. Cold methods are quicker to fit but need refitting more often and suit fine hair less well.
Cold hair extensions are tapes, rings and wefts. Nothing is heated, the attachment is mechanical or adhesive.
On thick hair the difference between hair extensions methods matters less. On fine hair it is decisive, and that is exactly why we work with hot fusion keratin bonds.

Bond weight
Short answer. One gram per strand is the industry standard, and on fine hair it creates constant tension at the root. Our bond weighs 0.2 grams.
Open any wholesale catalogue of pre-bonded hair extensions. You will see the same line. One hundred strands per pack, one gram per strand. Some suppliers offer 0.8 grams as a custom option.
A bond that size is often compared to a grain of rice, and the comparison is fair. That is roughly what it is.
Our lightest bond is a fifth of the standard. After activation it is pressed into a flat disc under a millimetre thick, so it does not form the familiar round ball at the root that sticks out, catches on a brush and shows in a high ponytail.

Fine hair
Short answer. With a one gram standard bond, no. With a 0.2 gram bond, yes, and fine hair is exactly what we designed it for.
Several London salons state honestly on their websites that bonded hair extensions are not recommended for very fine hair and suit healthy, thicker hair better. At the standard weight that is entirely true, and it is good that they say so.
Only weight is a variable, not a law. A one gram strand genuinely cannot hang from a fine hair, because the load on the follicle exceeds what it can carry. Remove four fifths of that weight and everything changes.
Our 0.2 gram bond was created for fine and weakened hair. It is five times lighter than the industry standard, presses flat and spreads the load along the strand rather than concentrating it in one point. So where other salons have to decline, we work.
How it is fitted
Short answer. From 200 to 450 bonds over 3 to 5 hours, each placed individually, set back from the scalp and at the correct angle.
Keratin bond hair extensions are fitted by zones, from the bottom upwards, in horizontal partings. From each parting the stylist separates a fine section of your hair, matches a donor strand of the right shade and fits the bond.
The keratin is heated to 200°C. At that temperature it softens just enough to wrap the hair without overheating it. The join is then compressed with pliers and pressed into a flat disc.
The gap from the scalp is not optional. A bond set too close pulls at the root and gets in the way of washing. Set too far and it becomes visible. The right distance is judged by eye, and that is precisely what cannot be learned from a video.
It does not hurt. You feel the heat as a light touch through the strand, and the pliers never touch your scalp.
Short answer. The longer the strand, the heavier it is, and the stronger the attachment has to be. Across the industry, bond weight rises with length.
Look at any professional catalogue. At 14 inches a bond weighs around 0.6 grams, at 18 inches around 0.8, at 22 inches a full gram. The logic is simple, because a long strand pulls down harder and a weak attachment will not hold it.
We solve it differently. Rather than making the bond heavier, we reduce the amount of hair in each strand and increase the number of strands. The load spreads across more points, each of which stays light, and that is why our work at 24 inches and beyond holds at a bond weight of 0.2 grams.
It takes longer. The result is worth it.
Safety
Short answer. Keratin is the protein your own hair is made of. The bond is made from a related material, so it is compatible with hair and does not break it down.
Italian keratin for extensions is a hot melt copolyamide, a high melting point polymer on a keratin base. It does not dissolve in water and withstands washing, drying and styling, but dissolves in a dedicated remover solution.
Your hair is made of the same protein. That is why the bond is not treated as a foreign body, does not dry the hair and does not alter its structure, unlike glue and resin, which stay on the hair as a foreign layer.
The strand tip is formed into a U shape roughly a centimetre long, which is why these strands are known as U-tips or K-tips.

Short answer. Both hold for exactly the same length of time, but the flat bond is less visible and does not catch, so we work with flat and combine when needed.
The round bond is the classic form of the method. It forms as a ball around the strand and holds well, but it leaves a bulky point at the root that catches on a brush and shows in a high ponytail.
The flat bond holds just as long, but after activation it is pressed into a disc under a millimetre thick. It lies along the head rather than standing away from it.
We use flat bonds throughout, and on thick hair we sometimes combine both types by zone, because under the bulk of hair at the nape the volume of the bond is irrelevant while security never goes amiss.
Refits
Short answer. With the right bond weight, correct fitting and refits on schedule, no. Damage comes from weight, tension and overdue refits, not from the method.
We answer honestly, because this is asked about hair extensions more than anything else.
The attachment itself does not damage hair. Keratin does not penetrate the hair, does not change its structure and does not react chemically. Damage arises for other reasons, and every one of them involves a person rather than the technology.
What genuinely causes harm. A bond too heavy for fine hair. Too many strands for your density. A bond set hard against the scalp. A missed refit, when a grown-out bond starts rotating and gathering hair around itself. Removal without solvent, by pulling. And bonded hair extensions fitted to hair that was not ready for them.
None of these is a property of the method. All of them are properties of poor work.
Removal
Short answer. Usually oil and heavy products at the roots, water that is too hot, drying only at the roots and a missed refit.
Reviews of bonded hair extensions online are full of stories about them starting to slip within a week. Here are the causes, because almost all of them are avoidable.
Oil and heavy masks at the roots. The most common cause by far. An oily film works between the hair and the keratin and weakens the grip, which is why every product goes on from the mid lengths down.
Water that is too hot. Keratin softens with heat. Every shower on maximum temperature loosens the bond a little.
Sleeping with wet hair. Damp keratin is softer, and a night of friction against the pillow does the rest.
Bonds stuck together. If they are not separated with your fingers after washing, two neighbouring bonds fuse and pull harder on the hair.
A missed refit. By month four the bond has grown far from the root, starts to rotate and winds the surrounding hair around itself.
And finally, a strand too heavy for its bond or the reverse. That is a matching error, and it is made at the consultation rather than in the aftercare.
How much hair
Short answer. Two to four months before a refit, and the hair itself lasts a year or more because it is re-tipped and fitted again.
How long hair extensions last depends on how fast your hair grows and on aftercare. Some clients need a refit at two months, others at four.
Most of the UK industry quotes three to five months, and some salons say six. We are deliberately more conservative, because the number that matters is not how long a bond can physically stay in but how long it stays in without starting to pull. Beyond four months a grown-out bond sits far from the root, rotates and gathers hair around itself, and the longer it stays the more natural hair comes away at removal.
At the refit the bond is removed with solution, the hair is cleaned, a new bond is fitted and the strand is placed closer to the root. The donor hair is not thrown away. Good Slavic hair is re-tipped several times, which is why second and third refits cost less than the first fitting.
Guarantee on the work is 3 months. If a bond slips within that time we refit it free. Hair quality guarantee is 12 months.
Growing out
Short answer. Your hair naturally loses around ten percent of its volume each month, so by month three or four the section holding the bond has thinned and the weight is redistributed.
This is biology rather than material wear. Every hair on your head runs its own cycle and falls out in its own time, with a new one growing in its place. That is normal and it happens constantly, you simply do not notice, because shed hairs leave when you wash and brush.
Under extensions they do not leave. The hair has shed, but it stays inside the bond, because the bond is holding it.
Then the arithmetic takes over. The section that originally carried the bond loses part of its hair naturally over three months, and the same load now rests on fewer living hairs. By month four the ratio is wrong, and that is when the tension appears that people write about in poor reviews.
A refit is not an upsell. It is a return of the load to a safe ratio.
The hair
Short answer. With a dedicated solution that softens the keratin, after which the bond is opened and slid off the strand. Nothing is cut and nothing is pulled.
To remove bonded hair extensions the solution is applied and left until the keratin softens. The bond is then opened carefully with pliers and slid off. Any residue is combed out.
The procedure across a whole head takes about an hour. Afterwards the hair is washed and examined strand by strand to assess its condition. If you are refitting the same day, the hair is re-tipped and goes straight back in.
Pulling bonds off by force, without solution, must never be done. That is precisely how the stories about losing half your hair after extensions come about.
Who it suits
Short answer. Fine hair takes 50 to 100 grams, medium 100 to 150, thick 150 to 200. More is not better.
With bonded hair extensions, bond count and hair weight are two different figures and they get confused constantly. Bonds are counted in units, hair in grams, and what decides the outcome is the weight, because the load on the root depends on mass rather than on the number of attachment points.
Excess weight is the most common error in bonded hair extensions. Extra grams make bonds more visible, drag on the root and complicate styling, and on fine hair they produce exactly the problem you came in to fix. We calculate weight from the density of your hair rather than from your wish, and if a request falls outside safe limits we say so.
The longer the strand, the fewer hairs fit into the same hundred grams. So lengths of 24 inches and beyond need more weight, or the ends look sparse.

Who it does not suit
Short answer. A light bond takes part of the daily load off the hair rather than adding to it, so under a correct fitting your own hair grows undisturbed.
Many clients choose keratin bond hair extensions not for length but to get through growing out a bad cut or a failed bleach. Bonded hair extensions work as protection here.
Your hair under a bond is brushed, styled and rubbed against clothing far less, because the donor strand takes all of that. At each refit we measure the growth and move the bond closer to the root, and the number of bonds falls over time as your own length increases.
After a year most clients are left with their own hair at the length they wanted, and the extensions simply come out.
First days
Short answer. Premium Slavic and uncoloured baby hair from Russia and Ukraine, single donor, with the cuticle intact and aligned.
With bonded hair extensions the bond is only half the job. Ninety percent of the result comes from the strand itself.
We work with single donor virgin hair, cuticle aligned, with more than 300 tones in stock and lengths from 16 to 28 inches. Baby hair goes along the hairline and at the temples with the lightest bonds, so there is no visible step in density.

Care
Short answer. Active heavy shedding, hair broken at the root and an inflamed scalp. In those cases we decline and refer you to a doctor.
The AV Extension team turns work away. Not often, but we do.
If your hair is coming out in handfuls right now, if it snaps at the root after a failed bleach, if the scalp is sore, flaking or inflamed, extensions can wait. A trichologist or a doctor first. Extensions are cosmetic, they do not treat hair loss.
That honesty saves your money and your hair.
Our standards
Short answer. Do not wash your hair for two days, do not tie it tightly for the first two weeks, and sleep with hair loose or in a soft plait.
For the first forty eight hours the keratin finishes stabilising. Washing during that window can weaken the grip, so wait two days, and if you need to freshen the roots use dry shampoo.
For the first two weeks do not pull your hair tight. A high tight ponytail, a firm bun and hard elastics create tension exactly where your hair is still adjusting to the new weight. After two weeks the restriction lifts completely.
A mild sense of tightness for the first two or three days is normal, especially with a first fitting. Pain is not. If anything hurts or pulls in one spot, message us straight away, it takes ten minutes to correct.
Guarantees
Short answer. Yes. The hair can be washed, blow dried, styled, straightened, curled, toned and worn in a high ponytail.
Bonded hair extensions made from real hair with a living cuticle take what your own hair takes. Straighteners and tongs at a moderate temperature with heat protection. Professional toning and highlights. Any updo.
The limits are short and honest. Never bleach at home with box product. Heat protection is not optional. Keep tools away from the bonds themselves. Oils and heavy masks only from the mid lengths down.
Keratin bonds place few restrictions on styling, and that is one of their main advantages over tapes.
Try it first
Short answer. Sulphate free shampoo, cool water, conditioner through the lengths only, separate the bonds after washing, sleep in a plait.
Wash your hair extensions two or three times a week rather than daily. Keep the water cool. Apply shampoo along the partings towards the roots without piling the lengths into a knot.
Conditioner and masks on the mid lengths and ends, never on the roots or the bonds. Detangle wet, with conditioner in, using a loop brush or a Tangle Teezer, working from the ends upwards while holding the strand near the bond.
After every wash separate the bonds with your fingers so they do not stick together. Dry the root area thoroughly. Sleep on a silk pillowcase with hair in a loose plait. Rinse chlorine and salt out the same day.
Refit every 2 to 4 months. Any question during wear is answered on WhatsApp around the clock.

Short answer. Eight rules followed on every hair extensions fitting at AV Extension without exception, because they are what separates a result that holds from one that disappoints within a month.
There is no certifying body anywhere in the hair extensions industry. Not in Britain, not anywhere. So every studio sets its own standard, and here is ours.
Bond weight is chosen for the hair, not for the request. We calculate the safe load from the density of your hair. If a request falls outside safe limits we say so plainly and offer the quantity your hair will carry.
The gap from the scalp is respected on every bond. Not on most. On all four hundred. A bond set too close pulls at the root, one set too far becomes visible.
The temperature is always 200°C. Not higher, so the hair is not overheated, and not lower, so the keratin sets fully. Equipment is checked before every fitting.
Removal only with solvent. Never by pulling, never with pliers alone. This rule is not up for discussion, because breaking it is what costs clients half their hair.
The scalp is examined before the work and at every refit. Irritation, flaking and scratch marks change the decision entirely.
Every fitting is documented. Before and after photographs, bond count and weight, strand length, shade map, date. These records are kept and available to you at consultation.
Material documentation exists and is shown on request. Certificate of analysis, REACH compliance confirmation, safety data sheets for the keratin and a certificate of origin for the hair.
We decline when extensions would cause harm. With active shedding, hair broken at the root or an inflamed scalp we postpone and refer you to a doctor. Losing a booking is easier than ruining hair.

Hot or cold
Short answer. Price depends on bond count, strand length, colour complexity and bond weight. We quote in writing after the consultation and then fix it.
What affects the cost. The number of bonds, which is set by the density of your hair rather than by preference. Strand length, because long hair is rare and costs more per gram. Colour complexity, if a gradient or blended shades are needed. The amount of baby hair along the hairline. And the mobile service, if you want it.
We do not publish a price list, deliberately. Two clients with the same hair length can need very different quantities of hair, so a published figure would either undercut and rise on the day, which is the complaint we hear most often about other salons, or frighten off someone the service would have suited. Your quote is fixed before booking and does not move afterwards.
