Texture-matched hair extensions are bespoke strands of 100% natural hair with a genuine curl, selected in advance to match your curl type in diameter, density and spring. Ordinary strands are straight: they demand that you either straighten your own hair every day or curl the extensions, just to bring the two anywhere near each other. Is it bad to straighten curls for extensions?

To make straight strands match your texture you have to straighten your own hair before every wash, then curl the extensions between washes. That is daily heat damage to your hair and to the strands alike. A texture-matched strand removes that cycle completely: nothing needs straightening and nothing needs curling.

Do Hair Extensions Cause Frizz on Curly Hair?

Why does curly hair frizz in the first place?

Does Your Own Hair Grow Under Extensions?

Yes. A light bond takes part of the daily load off a fine strand rather than adding to it. Are Curly Hair Extensions Naturally Curly or Permed?

Four checks you can use on any salon, including on us.

Ask what the hair looked like before. If the supplier bought straight hair and created the curl, that is a perm, whatever the website calls it.
Wash a test strand. Permed hair loosens noticeably after two or three washes. A genetic curl returns to the same pattern every time.
Look at the ends. A permed strand often carries a uniform, mechanical curl right to the tip. Natural hair varies slightly along its length and softens towards the ends.

How Is Colour and Texture Matched for Curly Hair?

Individually and step by step, because here the match has to be exact on three counts at once: colour, curl pattern and density. We do this at your consultation, before a single bond goes in.

We identify the curl type in each zone of the head separately, the crown, the temples and the nape, because the pattern is often different. Many clients have a 3A curl at the front and 3C or 4A at the nape.

Step 2. We match the strand to your texture.

Do You Cut and Shape Curly Hair Extensions?

A fitting is not finished when the last bond closes. Curly hair has to be shaped dry, because a curl cut while wet will sit somewhere completely different once it springs back up. We work through the head curl family by curl family, removing weight wherever the extensions create a shelf, and softening the outline so the new length flows into your own hair. On curly hair this shaping step is the difference between extensions that look fitted and extensions that look grown.

We never thin curly hair with texturising shears and we never cut a blunt line into a curl pattern. Shaping is included in every full invisible fitting at no extra cost.

What Is Curl Shrinkage?

Curl shrinkage is the natural loss of visible length caused by the spring action of curly hair. A straight 60 cm strand on a 3B curl looks like roughly 42 cm. The tighter the pattern, the stronger the shrinkage: on a loose wave it is around 10%, on tight rings it reaches 50%. That is why you cannot simply take your desired length for curly hair extensions: it has to be recalculated with shrinkage in mind.

Why is standard extension aftercare advice wrong for curly hair?

Most London salons tell extension clients to use a clarifying or volumising shampoo and to avoid anything moisturising. That advice is sound for fine, straight hair, where a rich product drags the root down and loosens the look. Follow it on curly extensions and you will see frizz within two washes. A curl is dry by design: the natural oil from your scalp cannot travel down a coiled strand the way it slides down a straight one, and a fitted strand receives no scalp oil at all. Curly extensions need the opposite routine, a gentle sulphate-free wash with deliberate moisture through the lengths, keeping the weight off the roots and the bonds rather than stripping it out of the hair altogether.

Washing

Wash no more than two or three times a week, in warm rather than hot water. Use a mild sulphate-free shampoo, applying it along the partings with massaging movements towards the roots, without bunching the lengths into a knot. Frequent washing with harsh sulphate shampoos dries out both your own hair and the fitted strands.

Conditioning and masks

After every wash apply a conditioner for curly hair through the lengths, keeping clear of the bonds and roots. Once or twice a week use a deep moisturising mask chosen for your hair porosity. Finish with a leave-in conditioner, which holds moisture and the curl pattern all day.

Detangling

Only detangle the strands when they are wet and conditioner is on. We recommend a soft wide-tooth comb, a Tangle Teezer or a loop brush designed for bonded extensions, which glides gently over the curl without tearing it. Work from the bottom upwards, from the ends towards the roots, holding the strand in your hand near the bond. Never brush dry hair and never pull at the root, because that destroys the pattern and creates tension.

Drying

Blot the hair with a microfibre towel rather than rubbing it with a rough towel. Dry with a diffuser on a low heat or let it dry naturally, gently lifting the strands towards the roots for volume. A diffuser protects both the bonds and the shape of the curl.

Products for curly hair

Use products made specifically for curls: a moisturising curl cream, a gel or mousse to define the curl, a light oil or serum through the mid-lengths and ends, but never on the roots and never on the bonds. Choose sulphate-free, alcohol-free formulas without heavy silicones. Between washes refresh the style with a spray of water and leave-in conditioner and scrunch the strands upwards in your palm to bring the shape back.

Heat

Give up daily straightening, that is the whole point of texture-matched extensions. If you do use a dryer or tongs, keep the temperature low and always apply a heat protectant, staying clear of the bonds.

Protecting the bonds

Do not put oil, masks or heavy conditioner directly onto the bonds and roots, because an oily film weakens the attachment. Do not go to sleep with wet hair, and separate the bonds gently with your fingers after every wash so they do not stick together.

Overnight care

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase and gather your hair into a loose high bun, or wear a silk bonnet. That way the pattern survives until morning, and friction and tangling around the bonds are kept to a minimum.

Swimming pool and sea

Before a pool or the sea, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner, wear a cap if you can, and rinse the chlorine and salt out straight afterwards to keep the premium Slavic hair soft.

Avoid heavy silicones that are not water soluble, because they build up and flatten the pattern. And keep every oil and butter off the roots and the bonds, where an oily film weakens the attachment. Protein and moisture also need to stay in balance: too much protein leaves a curl brittle, too little leaves it limp and shapeless.
